Hydrostatic Testing

Pressure testing with water, also known as hydrostatic testing, is one of the tools oil well operators use to verify well integrity. The test involves removing all components of the well (replacing packers if necessary), reassembling the tubing components, while pressurizing each joint to a pressure higher than the normal operating pressure. The test is designed to locate areas in the tubing that cannot tolerate the higher pressure. During the test, it is possible for the line to leak or break. When that occurs, there is an immediate drop in pressure and water is released released above the well head. The tubing segment where the leak occurred is removed, replacement tubing in installed and the new joint is then retested.
